Heard of These Celebrity Exes (and Their Current Flames)?

$

0

You’ve all been there, right? Sometimes it just doesn’t work out in a relationship or marriage. Maybe the timing didn’t work, the chemistry started to fade, or circumstances changed. Whatever the reason, there are plenty of fish in the sea so remain hopeful in the name of L-O-V-E!

And remember, celebrities are no different from the rest of us. They’ve experienced their share of heartbreak, too! Find out how these famous exes have (or have not) moved on with their current flames.

Lee Min Ho and Park Min Young

While filming “City Hunter” in 2011, they started seeing each other but, alas, it was only for a few months. We think it’s for the better anyway as fans have been rooting for the Lee Min Ho-Park Shin Hye (from “Heirs”) and Ji Chang Wook-Park Min Young (from “Healer”) pairings!

Jo In Sung and Kim Min Hee

Jo In Sung (from “That Winter, The Wind Blows”) has ladies swooning over his suave looks and charisma, and things are well in the love department, too! In early 2013, his relationship with actress Kim Min Hee became public news, but it ended 18 months later. She actually has a history with pretty boys, having dated Lee Soo Hyuk (from “Valid Love” and “King of High School”) for two years. These days, the rumor mill is running strong about the “It’s Okay, That’s Love” couple of Jo In Sung-Gong Hyo Jin dating in real life. Fingers crossed!

Han Ji Hye and Lee Dong Gun

Word was always buzzing that these two were headed down the aisle. However, their fairytale romance suddenly crumbled with their highly publicized breakup in 2008 after four years together. In 2009, Lee Dong Gun (from “Marry Him If You Dare”) was seen moving on with actress Cha Ye Ryun (from “She’s So Lovable” and “Golden Rainbow”). Meanwhile, Han Ji Hye (from “The Legendary Witch” and “Beyond the Clouds”) got married in 2010.

Jay Chou and Jolin Tsai

What can go wrong with the joining of two Mandopop mega superstars? Everything. It all came crashing down in 2005 when Jolin found out that Jay (from “Pandamen Heroic Detective”) was “hanging out” with Patty Hou (from “Love Buffet”). The silver lining is that both have happily moved on. Jolin has been dating Singaporean model/actor Vivian Dawson for more than three years and Jay recently married model/actress Hannah Quinlivan (from “Ti Amo Chocolate”) a month ago.

Dingdong Dantes and Karylle Tatlonghari

Before the epic #DongYan relationship, which began after meeting on the set of the teleserye “Marimar” in 2007, Dingdong Dantes (from “Dyesebel”) was actually with Karylle Tatlonghari (from “The Kitchen Musical”) for three years. It’s been speculated that Marian Rivera (from “Amaya” and “Darna”) was the cause for the breakup. What do you think?

Ananda Everingham and Jane Janesuda Parnto

The handsome Australian-Laotian actor and beautiful Thai-English actress were a hot item long ago, but these days Ananda (from “The Library” and “Happy Birthday”) has been seeing on-again, off-again girlfriend, Donut Manasnan Panlertwongskul, over the past few years. Meanwhile, Jane (from “Opas the Series Season 2” and “I.C.U. Ghost of Fine Arts University”) is enjoying single life with her best girlfriends, including Paula Taylor from the “True Love Next Door” series!

Barbie Hsu and Blue Lan

These two had active, high-profile relationships before and after dating each other for four years. Blue Lan (from “Apple in Your Eye”) dated actresses Queenie Tai (from “The Way We Were”) and Jocelyn Wang (from “Easy Fortune Happy Life”) while Barbie Hsu was linked with actor/singer Vic Zhou. Happily-ever-afters came for both when they each finally settled down, him with actress Jade Chou and her with a Chinese entrepreneur.

Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson

Teenage love is so innocent and pure, which was the case for Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson (both from “Two of Us”) who dated from 2006 to 2010. The reason they broke up was a rumored relationship between Gerald and Bea Alonzo (from “Only You”), which Alonzo later admitted was a ‘fling.’ Well, we say forget Gerald and good luck with Xian Lim, Kim!

Yoon Kye Sang and Sung Yu Ri

It used to be unheard of for K-pop idols to openly admit romantic relationships. One exception to the rule was Yoon Kye Sang of g.o.d. (from “Beyond the Clouds,” “The Greatest Love” and “Triple”) and Sung Yu Ri of Fin.K.L (from “Feast of the Gods” and “Romance Town”), who started dating in 1999 for six years. Why did it end? His mandatory military enlistment. For lucky Yoon Kye Sang, he has found happiness again with the gorgeous Honey Lee (from “Shine or Go Crazy” and “Modern Farmer”) since February 2013.

Hyun Bin and Song Hye Kyo

Everyone could feel the on-screen chemistry between these “World’s Within” costars, and fans cheered when it turned into a real-life romance in 2009. Sadly, it barely lasted two years. We bet you didn’t know that before Lee Byung Hun (from “IRIS”) married Lee Min Jung (from “Cunning Single Lady” and “Smile, You”), he dated Song Hye Kyo in 2003 for about one year!

Which couple do you wish had stayed together, or secretly cheered when the relationship ended? Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion in the comments!

Did you hear the news? Last week, our favorite star announced his plans to return to the small screen sometime in the “latter half of the year.” Lee Min Ho fans all over the world — the wait is almost over! Lee Min Ho’s handsome face will be gracing the TV once again.

During his absence from dramaland since “Heirs” went off the air in December 2013, Lee Min Ho has kept himself busy endorsing more than 30 different brands, making waves overseas, and appearing on the big screen. On January 30, 2014, Lee Min Ho became the first Korean celebrity to perform on CCTV’s Lunar New Year gala in China. The show reached a shocking 800 million viewers around the world!

Meanwhile, Lee Min Ho’s most recent movie, “Gangnam Blues,” was a big success in Korea, Asia and North America. On March 4, it was released in the Philippines and Australia. Lee Min Ho is so hot in the entertainment industry that he even turned down a role in the upcoming high-budget Chinese movie “Raid,” which already has $100 million from investors and is pursuing stars like Brad Pitt and Fan Bingbing for casting. There’s simply not enough of Lee Min Ho to go around!

For his upcoming schedule, the “Lee Min Ho Live in Hong Kong 2015” concert will be held on March 21. Did you score tickets to see him in person? We would in a heartbeat, just saying.

To mentally prepare for Lee Min Ho’s drama comeback, we thought it’d be nice to take a short visual walk down memory lane with photos highlighting special moments from his past hit shows. Enjoy!

Boys Over Flowers —  Goo Joon Pyo

Personal Taste — Jeon Jin Ho

City Hunter — Lee Yoon Sung

The Great Doctor — Choi Young

Heirs — Kim Tan

5 Shades of Xiu Jie Kai — Drama vs. Real-Life

$

Charming birthday boy Xiu Jie Kai turns 32 today! Born on March 6, 1983, Xiu Jie Kai (sometimes romanized as Shiou Chieh Kai) is a Taiwanese actor and singer who also has written two books on travel! The multi-talented star is currently entertaining viewers in not one, but two, on-air dramas, “Constellation Women Series - Aries Woman” — a Viki exclusive! — and “Dear Mom.”

Before becoming a leading man, Xiu Jie Kai left strong impressions on audiences with his portrayal of supporting characters in dramas such as “Mars,” “They Kiss Again,” “Easy Fortune Happy Life” and the blockbuster, sequel-spawning “Black & White.” Xiu Jie Kai’s versatility and acting chops made him so memorable that sometimes he overshadowed the leading actors in his productions. That’s saying a lot considering Xiu Jie Kai has worked with some of the biggest names in Chinese entertainment!

To celebrate Xiu Jie Kai’s birthday, in the name of fun, we present to you: “5 Shades of Xiu Jie Kai — Drama vs. Real Life.”

Is He Loyal?

DRAMA: In the Viki-exclusive drama, “Constellation Women Series — Aries Woman,” Xiu Jie Kai portrays Wang Shao Qiang, an architect who is a loyal boyfriend, if a bit naive, and a person who is always willing to help out a friend.

REAL LIFE: The same could be said of Xiu Jie Kai in real life! The actor has been in four of director Cai Yue Xun’s dramas and three of singer Della Ding’s MVs. It’s so nice to see long-lasting working relationships and continued collaborations in the Chinese entertainment industry!

Does He Have Luck With Women?

DRAMA: In the currently-airing drama, “Dear Mom,” Xiu Jie Kai is Chen Qi Le, a gym owner who has been earnestly crushing on the same woman for eight years. But if you were to ask him about it, he would deny it! “Dear Mom” takes you through the ups and downs of the lives of four daughters in the Li family.

REAL LIFE: In real life, Xiu Jie Kai has been dating Alyssa Chia, a fellow actress who is nine years his senior. The cute couple met through Alyssa’s younger brother and have only recently admitted to dating. Their relationship started out with Xiu Jie Kai training Alyssa Chia for a race, and their feelings eventually developed into something deeper. The two lovebirds spent the past Lunar New Year together and Xiu Jie Kai seems close with Alyssa’s mom. Here’s wishing lots of happiness to Alyssa Chia and Xiu Jie Kai!

Is He Generous?

DRAMA: In “Easy Fortune Happy Life,” Xiu Jie Kai plays Yan Yang, the kind-hearted grandson in a family of money-grabbers. He urges his cousin (played by Blue Lan) to forgive and forget, but his pleas fall on deaf ears.

REAL LIFE: Xiu Jie Kai is just as generous and kind, often donating his time to help the less fortunate and participating in charity events. Most recently, Xiu Jie Kai was at an event, wrapping dumplings with two young girls from a disadvantaged family. Upon hearing of the meager meal that their family would have for the Lunar New Year, Xiu Jie Kai urged his friends to donate funds so that the family could have a better celebration. Isn’t that heart-warming?

Is He a Good Friend?

DRAMA: Xiu Jie Kai as the adorable and sweet-natured Da Ye in “Mars” earned him the love of many viewers. Playing best friend to Chen Ling (played by Vic Zhou) made Xiu Jie Kai a fan favorite and the object of many love exclamations on fan boards.

REAL LIFE: Vic Zhou and Xiu Jie Kai are close friends who were once roommates. They worked on two dramas together — “Mars” and “Black & White” — and they attend each other’s birthdays, fan signings and book releases. Xiu Jie Kai also is best friends with Kun Da of “Love Cheque Charge” and Alien Huang of “Sweet Sweet Bodyguard” and “Lovestore at the Corner.”

Is He the Best Uncle?

DRAMA: This July, Viki users will be able to watch Xiu Jie Kai in “Alice in Wonder City,” a drama co-starring Aaron Yan! Xiu Jie Kai will portray Chen Hai Jie, a violinist from the countryside who is eager to make it big while Aaron Yan will play the established megastar.

REAL LIFE: Xiu Jie Kai’s character is enthusiastic about everything he does, which is what the real Xiu Jie Kai is like when he sees his niece! The uncle positively dotes on his small relative, and here’s proof!

I dare you to say this isn’t one of the cutest pictures you’ve ever seen!

Confused, Charlie asks her what she’s talking about, which causes Xiao Feng to break down in tears. The two are soon looking at each other eye-to-eye, and Xiao Feng, still teary, apologizes for putting him in this situation and says, “I really don’t know why I feel this way because I can’t like you.” Watch the emotional scene below!

The Gig — Yai’s Ring Confession

At a train station, Yai (played by Kittikhun Sumritpansuk) sings a love song meant to win the heart of Ant, who is watching him from the train trying to hold in her smile. After the song finishes, he jumps onto the train car and looks for her intently. Once he finds her, Yai takes off and offers Ant the ring that was hanging on his necklace saying, “This ring is always close to my heart. Therefore I want to give it to whom I love the most.” Watch the touching scene below at the 1:27:45 mark.

Could one of today’s hottest young singer-songwriters be making his acting debut in Bollywood? Ed Sheeran, the award-winning British singer of “The A Team” and “Thinking Out Loud” fame, might’ve just landed his first acting role.

After performing to a sold-out concert in Mumbai on March 1, the singer was invited by choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan to a party hosted by Abhishek Bachchan, the son of Bollywood acting royalty. The party was thrown to celebrate the nuptials of Abhishek’s cousin, Naina Bachchan, to Kunal Kapoor.

Ed Sheeran and Abhishek Bachchan hit it off so well that they both agreed Ed would make an appearance in the sequel to Farah Khan’s hit film “Happy New Year.”

“It was a surprise when my cousin Zubin called me from London to say that Ed Sheeran was going to be in town and wanted to meet up with me and my Bollywood friends,” Farah Khan told the Daily Mirror. “It was very gracious of Abhishek to let me bring Ed and his team to his home.”

“Happy New Year” was one of Bollywood’s biggest hits of 2014 and had a star-studded cast that included Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Schroff and Deepika Padukone. The film was produced under Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chilies Entertainment banner. Farah and Shah Rukh — more affectionately called “King Khan” — have a long history of collaborating together on film projects.

The ‘King Khan’ of Bollywood

It’s basically a known-fact: for every amazing drama, there’s an equally, and possibly even more amazing, soundtrack. Case in point, the phrases “You Are My Destiny” and “Almost Paradise” hold special places in the hearts of drama fans everywhere (for those of you in the dark, they’re from “My Love From the Star” and “Boys Over Flowers,” respectively.)

Because of the special place that original soundtracks (OSTs) hold in the world of dramas, our language-learning focus for this month will be centered around our favorite tunes, making March Viki’s Month of Music (#VikiMusic), where we’ll be celebrating and exploring the awesome world of soundtracks in the realm of global TV.

Many drama fans find themselves humming along to their favorite melodies but oftentimes don’t know what the songs mean. To help remedy this, we’re kicking off our Language Learning Month of Music by sharing four of our new favorite OSTs, complete with translations and pronunciations, that are sure to get you singing!

In Episode 5 of the currently on-air popular drama “Kill Me, Heal Me,” Se Gi (played by Ji Sung) pulls in Ri Jin (played by Hwang Jung Eum) for a kiss at an amusement park (with fireworks going off in the background, naturally). The song’s romantic lyrics coupled with Jang Jae In’s ethereal voice make for a perfect backdrop for this sweet moment. Relive the magic at 20:26 below!

In Episode 5 of the currently on-air Taiwanese drama “Boysitter,” Hao Jian Ren (played by River Huang) is heartbroken after discovering the truth about a video recording of Yuan Fei (played by Annie Chen), and he decides to end any sort of relationship with her. The intensity of this moment is perfectly reflected in the lyrics in Shi Shi’s ballad, making the scene that much more moving to watch. See the moment below from this Viki-exclusive drama starting at 16:45 below!

In Episode 6 of the currently on-air “Hyde Jekyll, Me,” Seo Jin (played by Hyun Bin) and Ha Na (played by Han Ji Min) spend time camping together. Ha Na admits she likes Seo Jin, and he soon realizes that he also cares for Ha Na. With Baek Ji Young’s sweet and affectionate lyrics as the perfect backdrop, the pair’s realization of their feelings for one another are made that much more special. Catch this adorable moment starting at 00:30 below.

In Episode 4 of the popular Taiwanese drama “The Way We Were,” Wei De (played by Leroy Young) takes Jia Ni (played by Ruby Lin) to a concert, where he looks at her with longing eyes, wishing that their relationship was something more than friends but not wanting to risk their friendship. As Eric Zhou sings the words that Wei De wants to express, your heart immediately hurts for Wei De, knowing that he’s unable to say what he truly feels for Jia Ni. Watch this heartbreaking moment at 1:00:30 below!

Usher in Spring With These ‘Hot’ March-Birthday Stars!

$

0

If you’re done already with this winter and ready for spring to get here as soon as possible, you’re not alone! While the temperature may still be low outside, let’s get ready for some warmer weather by thinking happier thoughts — with the help of these 10 “hot” global stars who are all celebrating birthdays this month!

Park Min Young — March 4

To go from playing a young attorney in “A New Leaf” to her role as a hot-shot reporter for the recently concluded drama “Healer,” Park Min Young worked out everyday and lost a reported 5 kilograms (11 pounds). We would say the hard work has definitely paid off!

Honoka Miki — March 7

It’s hard to believe that even though Honoka Miki is playing the role of the most adorable newlywed in the currently airing popular Japanese drama “Mischievous Kiss 2: Love in TOKYO” (the sequel to the huge 2014 hit “Mischievous Kiss: Love in TOKYO”), she just turned 18 this month! We can’t wait to see her mature as an actress in the years to come!

INFINITE’s L — March 13

The Korean singer and actor may only go by a one-letter name, but L is definitely making a name for himself beyond the boy band INFINITE. He didn’t have to stretch much for his roles playing an idol in “She’s So Lovable” and “Shut Up! Flower Boy Band,” but he moved beyond musical roles to play an assistant in “Cunning Single Lady” and a younger version of the lead actor So Ji Sub in the “Master’s Sun.” We have no doubt that leading roles are in the future for this talented star!

Marcela Mar — March 16

The sexy Colombian actress can pull off playing Major Mónica Umaña, a tough-as-nails police colonel in the telenovela “Infiltrated,” as well as look very feminine in a smoking-hot bathing suit!

Aislinn Derbez — March 18

As the daughter of parents who are actors, it’s no wonder the sexy Mexican actress Aislinn Derbez can do no wrong on-camera, even when she’s playing such disparate characters as a seductress in the rom-com “Mala” or a scared girl trying to escape sexual slavery in “Broken Promises.”

Xie Kun Da — March 18

The popular Taiwanese singer and actor went by the name Penny during his days with the boy band Energy, but Xie Kun Da has made an easy transition to acting with his successful roles in “Love Cheque Charge,” “Prince William” and “Happy 300 Days.”

Kim Rae Won — March 19

If you weren’t already a fan of Kim Rae Won’s chiseled good looks before his role as a cutthroat prosecutor in the recently concluded political thriller “Punch,” we guarantee you will be after watching this exciting-yet-touching drama. Time to go back and watch him in “A Thousand Days’ Promise”!

M.I.B’s Kangnam — March 23

Born in Japan to a Japanese father and a Korean mother, Kangnam of the Korean hip-hop group M.I.B used to be bullied as a child in Japan for being mixed race! Kim Hyun Joong Confirms Military Enlistment on March 31!

Kim Hyun Joong has confirmed that he will be enlisting for South Korea’s mandatory two-year military service on March 31, with his reps saying that the star wants to “go as quietly as possible.”

The popular South Korean actor and singer (famous for his roles in “Inspiring Generation,” “Playful Kiss” and “Boys Over Flowers”) has been mired in controversy since last year after his ex-girlfriend came forward in August to accuse him of two incidents of assault. After being indicted and fined on January 19, the public humiliation finally seemed to be behind him. But the star again became front-page news when it was reported that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant and expecting a baby in September.

Kim Hyung Joong and his ex-girlfriend, only identified as “Miss Choi (31),” confirmed last month that they had reconciled following the pregnancy news.

March 31 will be a sad day for Hallyu fans, as Kim Hyun Joong will be enlisting on the same day as Choi Jin Hyuk, Kim Jae Joong and Super Junior’s Sungmin.

Hallyu Fans React to Polaris Entertainment Shutdown and CEO Arrest

Ilkwang Group and Polaris CEO Lee Gyu Tae (from left), model-actress Clara, rapper Iron and girl group Ladies’ Code

The Korean entertainment industry and many of its fans are reeling from last night’s news that the South Korean police have shut down Polaris Entertainment after CEO Lee Gyu Tae was arrested on March 11 on charges of fraud and embezzlement.

The beleaguered agency manages such popular artists as Ladies’ Code, Kim Bum Soo, Ivy and Yang Dong Geun. Polaris Entertainment has been in the news quite a bit since last year after the tragic accident that resulted in the death of EunB and RiSe of Ladies’ Code and the ongoing controversy surrounding Clara’s charges of sexual harassment against Lee Gyu Tae.

Lee Gyu Tae’s trouble with the law stems from his activities with Ilkwang Group, the parent company of Polaris Entertainment. Ilkwang is an arms trading giant, and Lee Gyu Tae, who also heads the group, is accused of lobbying to artificially inflate the prices of training weapons that are being imported from Turkey for the Korean Air Force, allowing the Ilkwang Group to make as much as $50 million USD from the deal. Both Lee Gyu Tae and Ilkwang Group are being investigated for embezzlement and overcharging the Korean military.

The reactions of many Hallyu fans have been strong, ranging from disbelief to sympathy for the stars represented by Polaris. See the many reactions below from Twitter!

And one very worried fan took to Instagram to express her worries:

Since the Ilkwang Group’s establishment in 1985, Lee Gyu Tae has established subsidiaries in education with the establishment of private academies and in the entertainment industry with Polaris Entertainment.

The news comes a week before solo artist Iron was scheduled to debut from Polaris. What impact this will have on his debut, as well as the comeback of Ladies’ Code and Clara’s lawsuit remains to be seen.

What effect do you think this surprising news will have on Korean entertainment? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!

What Is White Day and How Do Your Favorite Asian Stars Celebrate It?

$

It’s a well-known fact that in the United States, many men rush to buy their significant others a last-minute Valentine’s Day gift on February 13th or on the morning of February 14th. As they’re giving their gifts, they’ve probably thought, “Why do I have to do this when I might not get anything in return?”

Well, guys, not to worry! If you and your significant other recognize White Day, you each will have your own day to give and receive a token of your love! White Day is celebrated in Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan. In those countries, Valentine’s Day (February 14) is a day for women to give the men in their lives something sweet, and a month later on March 14, men reciprocate and give the women in their lives something sweet. In Japan, men usually give women chocolate, but in South Korea, the men typically give lollipops to women.

So why does White Day exist? Is it any surprise that it’s the mastermind of the confection industry? In 1978, the National Confection Industry of Japan introduced “Marshmallow Day” to boost post-Valentine’s Day sales. The holiday stuck but the marshmallows didn’t, and here we are.

When March 14th comes around every year, idols and actors take to social media to wish their fans a Happy White Day with some pretty “sweet” pictures. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite stars and how they celebrated White Day in years past.

2014

In 2014, Jimin of the popular idol group BTS took to the group’s fan café and posted a White Day message to fans.
Hello~In charge of charms, multi-talented Jiminie’s here to write a post after a long while hehe. Without change, I’m here after having first of all, our music broadcast (schedule) stage today~~ heheh But!! To think about it it’s White Day today?? Time’s passing so fast kekekekekeke Did you have a lot of sweets?heheIf you give sweets on White Day isn’t it rather senseless~~ right? keke Why do girls have to give chocolates, while guys give sweets?! kekeke So I wanted to give both chocolates and sweets but there’s no chance to do so I’ll just upload this photo of me holding this much amount (of sweets)~ heh Before today ends, do eat a lot of chocolates~(Since I’ve given my consent, you won’t get fat keke eat it just for today~~ just for today only!)

After School member and actress UEE (“Fool’s Love” and “Golden Rainbow”) was so busy filming that she didn’t receive any candy from anyone on White Day last year. She asks fans to send candy. It looks like an S.O.S. for sugar. The star will probably be flooded with it this year!

2PM members Nichkhun, Jun. K, Wooyoung, Junho, Chansung and TaecYeon (“Wonderful Days” and “Who Are You”) all took time out of their busy schedules to personally make candy bags, and 314 lucky fans received the bags. How much of that candy actually made it into the bags is the question.

Actor Choi Woo Sik (“Fool’s Love” and “Pride and Prejudice”) posted his White Day message to his fans via his agency, JYP Entertainment’s Twitter.

Leader Yonghwa posted on the band’s official Twitter a message to their fans as a way of wishing them well and promoting CNBLUE’s tour they were doing at the time. Fans can’t help but swoon for these good-looking four.

Actor Lee Hyun Woo (“To the Beautiful You”) virtually gave his fans roses for White Day and told them he loved them. Which lucky girl do you think actually got these beautiful flowers?

If you need to be reassured that there are a lot of good people in this world, then look no further than Jang Na Ra, who celebrates her 34th birthday on March 18.

Korean actress/singer, best known for her starring roles in “Fated to Love You,” “School 2013” and “Baby-Faced Beauty,” as well as numerous Chinese dramas, has donated not only her time but also money to those in need.

As a dedication to the birthday girl, here are her five acts of kindness that makes us respect Jang Na Ra for the kind of person she is.

Jang Na Ra starred in the 2011 Korean drama ‘Baby-Faced Beauty

She Donated Powdered Milk to Children in North Korea

In 2004, Jang Na Ra starred in a Seoul Milk commercial, but she didn’t accept her appearance fee. Instead, she requested that the money be used to send powdered milk to North Korean children. The total cost of the dry milk was 200 million won, or about $177,500 USD.

She Held a Fundraising Concert for Leukemia Patients in China

Jang Na Ra held a benefit concert in 2007 for children in China with leukemia, and with that the Jang Foundation was born. Her fans raised money at a fan club meeting during the celebration of the 15th anniversary of Korean-Chinese diplomatic relations. At the end of the concert, Jang Na Ra was named Goodwill Ambassador to a Chinese charity organization, making her the first foreign ambassador.
Jang Na Ra starred alongside gorgeous leading men Jang Hyuk and Choi Jin Hyuk in 2014’s hit drama ‘Fated to Love You

She Donated Money and Clothes to China After the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake

When the earthquake devastated China, Jang Na Ra donated $150,000 and an additional $7.5 million-worth of clothing. The clothing was organized by the parent company of a Chinese coat company Jang Na Ra was modeling for at the time. The company donated 100,000 down parkas to Jang Na Ra’s charity and in turn, she went to Sichuan herself and delivered the coats.

She Volunteered for a 3-Day Event in South Gyeongsang Province

Jang Na Ra joined legendary Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan, K-pop group Super Junior, Korean actress Jeon Hye Bin and actor Jeong Doo Hong for a three-day event where they all spent time with 100 children who were either being raised in single-parent households or in orphanages. The event, which was held in 2009, included a soccer game, a performance and a barbecue! It was run by the Jackie Chan Group Korea and sponsored by Tongyoung-si.

Jang Na Ra played teacher Jung In Jae in ‘School 2013

She Volunteered With Her Older Brother at a Kindergarten Opening

Charity work must run in the Jang family! After being named ambassador of Community Chest of Korea, Jang Na Ra and her older brother, Jang Sung Won, took time out of their schedules to volunteer at a kindergarten opening in Incheon in February 2014. Jang arrived early to take a look at the kindergarten and cut the ribbon at the beginning of the ceremony. The two Jang siblings served lunch to the children and greeted each and every one of them.

Jang Na Ra and older brother, Jang Sung Won, love to take pictures together. Don’t they look alike?

The birthday girl has done a lot for other people and it is truly inspiring. Her altruistic giving should inspire all of us to help the less fortunate as well.

Jang Na Ra may return to Korean television in the new drama “Hello Monster,” for which she is considering the lead role possibly starring alongside Lee Jin Wook (“The Three Muskateers,” “Nine: Nine Times Time Travel” and “I Need Romance 2”). Are you excited about her possible return to the small screen? Let us know in the comments!

American Remake of ‘My Love From the Star’ Delayed

$

Fans of “My Love From the Star” were both ecstatic and hesitant when news broke last fall that major American broadcaster ABC was planning to adapt the widely popular 2014 Korean drama series for a U.S. audience. But it looks like the show was not included in the recently announced 2015-2016 season, fueling speculation that the project has been delayed or canceled.

A basic premise for the American version described a supernatural romance between a centuries-old superhero, “James,” and a beautiful actress, “Lark,” that appeared to stay true to writer Park Ji Eun’s original creation (as it should since she was slated to be an executive producer of the American version). Some saw it as a sign that Korean dramas were gaining recognition among wider audiences, while others were a bit worried that a remake would never be quite as good as the original (not to mention the American version of “Boys Over Flowers”).

Depending on which side of the tracks you fall on, it’s either good or bad news that the remake is not planned for ABC’s recently announced 2015-2016 season. HB Entertainment, which produced the original series, has not heard any update from ABC since February about the status of the remake. It’s possible that a pilot could be reordered for a future season or from another broadcaster, although there’s no confirmation at this time.

It looks like we may have to wait longer to see what an American version would look like, if it happens at all. What do you think — are you disappointed about this news or are you glad that ABC isn’t going forward with the remake? Share your thoughts in the comments!
