17 Drama Character Names That Are a Play on Words

$
0
0

Sometimes the writers of our favorite Asian dramas make the names of their characters into an interesting or funny play on words. The names have an intentional secondary meaning in some Korean or Taiwanese dramas. Some names seem like a test to see if we, the viewers, would notice. While other, more blatant character names deliberately tie into the plot of the entire series.

Here is a roundup of some of our favorite character names from recent and current dramas that are an interesting play on words!

Yoon Jin Yi looks better than any blade of grass we’ve ever seen in ‘It’s Okay, That’s Love

Same goes for Gu Hye Sun in ‘Boys Over Flowers

Can Yin Hang make her name come true with Godfrey Gao by her side in ‘Never Give Up, Dodo’?

But Godfrey Gao’s character definitely has a ‘fly’ girlfriend in ‘Never Give Up, Dodo

Im Siwan keeps thinking people are calling him whenever they say ‘yes’ in ‘Incomplete Life

Kang So Ra is the rock-star employee everyone wants to say hi to in ‘Incomplete Life

Lee Sung Min’s street smarts protect his team from outside threats in ‘Incomplete Life

Roxanne Yang has lots of dreams about her future in ‘Love Family

Song Ha Yoon is like a breath of fresh, spring air compared to her deadbeat family in ‘Sweden Laundry

Born in a women’s prison, Jung Yi Han’s character has high hopes for a better life in ‘The Legendary Witch

Baek Jin Hee’s character is named after a root vegetable while her younger brother is named ‘one star’ in ‘Pride and Prejudice’; hmmm… no favoritism there.

Aaron Yan would be more aptly named ‘little dear’ in ‘Fall in Love With Me

Lee Si Young explores whether having an affair is ‘valid’ in ‘Valid Love
River Huang has the perfect name for a man-child who needs to mature and earn his ex’s trust in Boysitter

Oh Yeon Seo proves that sometimes barley is preferable to a more polished grain in ‘Jang Bo Ri Is Here

Yoon Eun Hye’s prophetic character name tries to keep her from repeating history in ‘Marry Him If You Dare

George Hu is definitely anything but ordinary in ‘Love Cheque Charge

Did you pick up on these alternate meanings of the above character names? Let us know which is your favorite in the comments!

There must be something in the air 10 months before February because so many of our favorite Asian stars were born this month! With so many beautiful, talented stars to choose from in a month when we traditionally celebrate love, decide for yourself which stars are your ideal type.

THE SWEET WHOLESOME TYPE

February 8 — Baek Jin Hee

The Korean star of “Pride and Prejudice” and “Triangle” can definitely look sultry when it calls for it, but with a face like that, her sweeter side shines through!

February 8 — Nam Woohyun

The singer-turned-actor proves that he can rock any image as part of the popular K-pop boy band INFINITE, but Nam Woohyun’s boy-next-door quality is on full display in his recent starring role in “Hi! School: Love On.”

February 13 — Lee Sang Woo

Starring in the popular dramas “Glorious Day,” “A Word From Warm Heart” and “Goddess of Marriage,” Lee Sang Woo has sweetness and sunshine written all over his face!

February 15 — Jin Se Yeon

No matter what kind of anguish or upset her characters may face in her recent dramas “Doctor Stranger,” “Inspiring Generation,” “Bridal Mask” and “Five Fingers,” Jin Se Yeon has a resting sweet face, in our opinion!

February 19 — Amber Kuo

Taiwanese actress Amber Kuo can be unpredictable, stubborn and materialistic as her characters in “Love Forward,” “Channel-X,” “The Happy Times of That Year” and “Invincible Shan Bao Mei,” but one look into her big eyes will tell you that sweetness is her true nature!

THE OOZING SEX APPEAL TYPE

February 9 — Guy Ecker

Born in Brazil to American parents, Guy Ecker has starred in many popular telenovelas in South America and Mexico. See the sexy actor in “Eva Luna”  and “Passion of the Heart.”

February 13 — Park Ki Woong

One piercing look from Park Ki Woong, and your legs will go weak. See those sexy eyes in “Full House Take 2” and “Bridal Mask.”

February 14 — Ice Preechaya Pongthananikorn

The drop-dead gorgeous Thai actress is as sexy as they come. Watch her acting prowess in “Opas the Series Season 2.”

February 16 — Lee Min Jung

Lee Min Jung may be expecting her first baby with husband

Lee Byung Hun in a couple of months, but she will be one of the sexiest moms in Korea! Watch her sultry side shine through in “Cunning Single Lady,” “All About My Romance,” “Big,” “Midas” and “Boys Over Flowers.”

February 19 — Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor is a second-generation Indian actor who has perfected the sexy stare. Watch the seductive actor in the hit Hindi movies “Vivah” and “36 China Town.”

THE BROODING MYSTERIOUS TYPE

February 2 — Hong Jong Hyun

Hong Jong Hyun may show his lighter side as MC of “SBS Inki Gayo” and as a star of “We Got Married Season 4” with Yura, but we can’t get over his mysterious, motorcycle-riding character in the recent hit drama “Mama.”

February 18 — Kang So Ra

Kang So Ra is a beautiful Korean actress who just seems to have a lot going on behind her soulful eyes. Maybe that’s why she plays such smart, multilayered characters in “Incomplete Life,” “Doctor Stranger” and “Dream High 2.”

February 21 — Kang Ha Neul

Kang Ha Neul always looks like he’s deep in thought, which adds to his air of seriousness and mystery.   See his many pensive moods in “Incomplete Life,” “Angel Eyes,” “Heirs,” “Monstar” and “To the Beautiful You.”

February 25 — Rashida Jones

Rashida Jones may appear in many memorable comedies, but the American actress’s knowing smile gives a hint of mystery to her personality. Watch her dead-pan comedic deliveries in Parks and Recreation Season 1” and “Parks and Recreation Season 2.

THE FUNNY BOY/GIRL TYPE

February 11 — Go Ah Ra

Go Ah Ra is a beautiful Korean actress with unforgettable hazel eyes, but she can make her face contort into the most comedic expressions that few actresses can match. See all elastic facial expressions for yourself in “You’re All Surrounded,” “Reply 1994” and “No Limit.”

February 22 — Kim Chang Wan

The veteran Korean musician (of the Kim Chang Wan Band) and actor has played some dark roles (his most recent ones in “Secret Door,” “Secret Love Affair,” “My Love From the Star” and “Who Are You”) but Kim Chang Wan’s naturally smiling face makes us think he must be the nicest guy and much more like the nurturing, caring father figure of his character in Good Doctor.”

February 23 — Aziz Ansari

If there’s an office clown in every workplace, it would be someone like Aziz Ansari. The American comedian became a household name with his iconic role as Tom Haverford in the comedy “Parks and Recreation.” See the funny man in Parks and Recreation Season 1” and “Parks and Recreation Season 2.

February 28 — Min Hyo Rin

Min Hyo Rin has had dramatic roles after she broke into television dramas in 2011, such as her maid character in Romance Town,” but her current starring role in the Viki-exclusive drama series Perservere, Goo Hae Ra” proves that she was made for comedy!

Happy 29th birthday, Choi Jin Hyuk!

We will miss the multi-talented actor, whose breakout role as
Wal Ryung in Gu Family Book captured many people’s hearts. Audiences famously clamored for more Choi Jin Hyuk when his two-episode arc was completed in the beginning of the series. Kim Eun Sook, the writer of Heirs was so impressed with Choi Jin Hyuk’s portrayal of Wal Ryung in Gu Family Book that she cast him as Kim Won, the cold-hearted older brother to Lee Min Hos Kim Tan.

Both these roles heightened Choi Jin Hyuks star trajectory, landing him a leading role in Emergency Couple and the just-concludedPride and Prejudice.

But hearts broke all over the world when Choi Jin Hyuk announced at the Pride and Prejudice wrap-up party that he plans to fulfill his mandatory two-year military service starting next month!

Why must you go, Choi Jin Hyuk? (Photo source: ‘Heirs’)

Your Eyes Are Not Deceiving You — Stars in 2 Simultaneous Dramas!

If you’re an avid drama fan, you’re probably watching several dramas at the same time, switching from one title to another as you eagerly await new episodes of currently airing dramas to be released. And if you have sharp eyes, you might have noticed that some faces look very familiar!

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. The following eight stars may be considered some of the hardest working actors in the industry, as they juggle appearing in two simultaneous dramas. They may don glasses or change their hair, but they are definitely the same actors playing two different characters in concurrent on-air dramas!

Lee Seung Joon — A Dutiful Son-in-Law vs. A Dutiful Assistant

Lee Seung Joon in ‘The Legendary Witch’ (left) and ‘Hyde Jekyll, Me

Lee Seung Joon sports studious-looking glasses for his role as Park Won Jae, a dutiful son-in-law who tries to win favor from his father-in-law/boss in “The Legendary Witch.” For his second role as Kwon Young Chan, the dutiful assistant to a boss with multiple personality disorder in “Hyde Jekyll, Me,” Lee Seung Joon takes off the glasses and puts much more bouncy curls in his hair!

Hyeri — Crime-Fighting High School Student vs. A College Student

Hyeri in ‘Seonam Girls’ High School Investigators’ (left) and ‘Hyde Jekyll, Me

Fun hair accessories and waves in her hair do the trick to make Hyeri look like a high school girl for her role as Lee Ye Hee in “Seonam Girls’ High School Investigators.” For her role as Min Woo Jung, a college student involved in a love triangle in “Hyde Jekyll, Me,” Hyeri goes for a more stylish bob.

Melvin Sia — A Lawyer With Dangerous Ties vs. A Company CEO in Love With an Employee

Melvin Sia in ‘Dear Mom’ (left) and ‘Boysitter’?

The major change that Melvin Sia makes to go from his role as Du Xiao Fei, a lawyer and triad gang leader’s son in “Dear Mom,” to Wen Hao Ran, the company CEO in “Boysitter,” is to grow a thin mustache! Do you think he can grow that mustache in one day as he switches between roles?

Oh Sang Jin — A Free-Loading Son vs. A Free-Loading Studious Son

Oh Sang Jin in ‘Family Is Coming’ (left) and ‘Sweden Laundry’

To go from playing James, a free-loading adopted son in “Family Is Coming” to Eun Chul, a self-absorbed son who only wants to spend time studying in “Sweden Laundry,” Oh Sang Jin puts a part in his wavy hair and wears smart-looking glasses!

Lee Shi Un — A Popular Webtoon Artist vs. a Humorless Chief Psychiatry Resident

Lee Shi Un in ‘Fool’s Love (aka Ho Goo’s Love)’ (left) and ‘Kill Me, Heal Me’

To transform from his role as Park Min Jae, the chief psychiatry resident in “Kill Me, Heal Me,” to Shin Chung Jae, a popular webtoon artist in “Fool’s Love (aka Ho Goo’s Love),” Lee Shi Un sweeps his hair off of his forehead and shows his bushy eyebrows!

Xiu Jie Kai — A Playboy Gym Owner vs. A Suave Architect

Xiu Jie Kai in ‘Dear Mom’ (left) and ‘Constellation Women Series — Aries Woman

We can’t see much of a physical transformation for Xiu Jie Kai as he goes from playing Chen Qi Le, a skirt-chasing gym owner in “Dear Mom,” to Wang Shao Qiang, an architect who is secretly dating a celerity in “Constellation Women Series — Aries Woman”!

Choi Duk Moon — A Fatherly Dentist vs. An Old Bachelor Swim Coach

Choi Duk Man in ‘Seonam Girls’ High School Investigators’ (left) and Fool’s Love (aka Ho Goo’s Love)

The transformation that Choi Duk Moon makes for his two current roles is the most dramatic. As An Hong Min, a dentist and father of one of the girls in “Seonam Girls’ High School Investigators,” the actor has wavy hair that defies gravity with streaks of gray. But for his role as So Shi Min, a professional swim coach in “Fool’s Love (aka Ho Goo’s Love),” he has bushy straight hair that covers all of his forehead!

Jung Won Joong — A Comic-Store Owning Father vs. The Techie Accidental-Spy Father

Jung Won Joong in ‘Fool’s Love (aka Ho Goo’s Love)’ (left) and ‘Spy

Jung Won Joong oozes fatherly vibes as he goes from Kang Yong Moo, the comic-store owning father of the main character in “Fool’s Love (aka Ho Goo’s Love),” to Kim Woo Suk, the high-tech company executive father of the main character in “Spy.” But other than changing his glasses and clothes, there’s not much difference in his two characters’ appearances!

If you’re not tuning into any of these current dramas, you’re missing out! Full of humor, intrigue and romance, these are some of the best shows on-air right now! Which star’s character is your personal favorite? Let us know in the comments!

5 Baby Name Suggestions for Birthday Boy Ji Sung!

February 27 marks the 38th birthday of Ji Sung, and fans couldn’t be more excited. But his birthday isn’t the only thing to celebrate; Ji Sung and his wife, actress Lee Bo Young, are expecting their first child in July. The couple has given the baby the nickname of Kwak Bo Be. Kwak coming from Ji Sung’s real family name, Bo coming from Bo Young, and Be coming from the word “baby.”

To help celebrate the newest addition to Ji Sung’s family, we’ve come up with five fun baby name suggestions based on the recent popular dramas that both Ji Sung and Lee Bo Young have acted in!

Ji Sung and Lee Bo Young dated for 7 years before getting married in 2013

Hye + Gi = Hye Gi

In the drama “I Hear Your Voice,” Lee Bo Young plays attorney Jang Hye Seong, and in his current drama “Kill Me, Heal Me,” Ji Sung plays a man with multiple personalities, one of whom is named Shin Se Gi. To Koreans, every name has meaning. In this case, Hye means intelligent woman and Gi means rising. If the baby is a girl, she will have the potential to do great things just by her name alone.

Ji Sung displays his acting talents in ‘Kill Me, Heal Me’ by playing 7 different characters!

Jae + Hyuk = Jae Hyuk

Lee Bo Young played Kang Jae Mi in “Hooray for Love” and Ji Sung played Min Hyuk in “Secret.” Jae means wealthy and Hyuk means radiant, so this little nugget can possibly be a shining star like his parents.

Ji + Young = Ji Young

Not only will this name combine two drama characters’ names, but also the parents’ names. Ji Sung played Cha Ji Heon in “Protect the Boss” and Mok Ji Sang in “The Great Seer” while Bo Young played Lee Seo Young in “My Daughter Seo Young.” With this name, Ji means wisdom and Young means valiant (possessing or showing courage or determination). The baby will be both smart and brave.

Ji Sung plays rebellious future company chairman Cha Ji Heon in ‘Protect the Boss

Min + Sung = Min Sung

Taking the first part of the name from dad’s drama “Secret” and the second part from mom’s drama “I Hear Your Voice,” Min means people and Sung means victorious. We may have a future president on our hands with a name like that!

Ji Sung first acted alongside Hwang Jung Eum in the 2013 drama Secret
Na + Hyun = Na Hyun

Taken from “Kill Me, Heal Me,” where Ji Sung plays a 17-year-old twin named Yo Na, and “God’s Gift — 14 Days,” where Lee Bo Young plays Kim Soo Hyun, Na means beautiful and Hyun means radiant. So the combination will ensure that the new baby “shines beautifully”!

We wish Ji Sung and Lee Bo Young the warmest congratulations on their new baby and Ji Sung the happiest of birthdays. Do you have any baby name suggestions based on the soon-to-be parents’ dramas? Leave your suggestions in the comments!

If You Loved ‘Secret Love Affair,’ Don’t Miss This New Drama!

      0
Kim Hee Ae and Yoo Ah In heated up the screen with their illicit romance in Secret Love Affair

As awkward as it was for a happily married woman to tell her husband that she is watching a drama called “Secret Love Affair,” it’s no secret that this drama was one of my favorites from 2014 and possibly all-time. The story follows Oh Hye Won (played by Kim Hee Ae), a woman in her 40s, who falls in love with Lee Seon Jae (played by Yoo Ah In), a piano prodigy in his 20s who is being mentored by her husband. But the fact that the screenwriter and director (Jung Sung Joo and Ahn Pan Seok), as well as Kim Hee Ae, won big at the 50th Baeksang Arts Awards and the 3rd APAN Star Awards proves that I wasn’t the only one to think that this was one of the best nuanced, incredibly well-written and well-acted dramas.

If you’re like me and have felt that nothing else quite like it has been as worthy of watching lately, we’re in luck! The same writer-director team from “Secret Love Affair” has just come out with a new drama, “Heard It Through the Grapevine,” which just launched on February 23!

The posters for ‘Heard It Through the Grapevine’ (like above) have the same style/feel to Secret Love Affair

If the first two episodes of “Heard It Through the Grapevine” is a good indicator of the mood for this new drama, we are in for a treat! The drama is about a high school boy, Han In Sang (played by Lee Joon), who is under tremendous pressure from his politically connected, affluent parents to do well in school and succeed. But after making a “mistake” with his girlfriend, Seo Bom (played by Go Ah Sung), In Sang’s parents must try to figure out how to keep his bright future intact while trying to keep the family secret from getting out!

But unlike “Secret Love Affair,” where much of the intimacy between the older Kim Hee Ae and younger Yoo Ah In was off-camera, the hot make-out scenes between Lee Joon and Go Ah Sung in “Heard It Through the Grapevine” are very much on-screen and could teach a thing or two to other dramas of the “shocked, open-eyed, closed-mouthed kiss” variety. The young actors have great chemistry and aren’t afraid to show it — making their story line of getting carried away much more believable.

The hot make-out scene that went too far in Heard It Through the Grapevine

Like “Secret Love Affair,” the cast of “Heard It Through the Grapevine” is top-notch. Although the drama deals with serious topics, the writing and acting are so good that you can’t help laugh or smile at unexpected moments as humor is expertly infused in the storyline. When In Sang first learns that Bom is pregnant with his baby the week before her due date, he swears to her parents that he will take responsibility and immediately takes her to meet his parents. That first-meeting scene at the beginning of Episode 2 is one of the most jaw-dropping, unexpectedly funny scenes you will ever see!

The parents (played by Yoo Ho Jung and Yoo Jun Sang) can’t believe what they are about to witness!

Be sure to favorite this great new drama and watch what is already looking like one of the best new dramas of the year! Let us know what you think of it after you see the first two episodes!
