Few Korean actors have gone through as many style changes as Kim Hyun Joong. For his upcoming January drama, Inspiring Age, the Hallyu star sports a short, manly haircut to match his tough character. How does it compare to his looks in past years?

Tell us your favorite hairstyle in the poll at the end of this blog post!

Boys Over Flowers (2009)

In his first major K-drama, Hyun Joong played the soft-spoken second lead, Yoo Ji Hoo. His shoulder-length red hair and sideswept bangs accentuated his elegant, prince-like demeanor.

Playful Kiss (2010)

Hyun Joong took on a more natural black hairstyle to play popular high schooler Baek Seung Jo in Playful Kiss. Even without his brightly-colored locks from Boys Over Flowers, Hyun Joongs good looks make him stand out as the most handsome senior in school.

Kim Hyun Joongs dark hair still shines in Playful Kiss

Barefoot Friends (2013)

On the variety show Barefoot Friends, Hyun Joong often covers his hair with a hat, so that only the edge of his bangs is visible.

Inspiring Age (2014)

The Korean boy band LC9 (aka League of Competition #9) finally kickstarted its Asia showcase and its first stop was Singapore! The talented six-member group drew a large crowd of screaming fans from its fan-sign session, showcase, photo session and even a high-touch session (which means fans got to high five them!).

With their fans gathering early equipped with fan boards and cameras, the boys of LC9 were shown lots of excitement after their stage entrance.

Despite the intense choreography, LC9 kept pace with the high energy of its songs and even paired the vocals with some nifty footwork. Check out the dance version of the band’s music video to get a taste of their performing abilities!

In addition to the group’s own songs, LC9 also performed covers of One Direction, Justin Bieber, David Guetta and even Taiwanese singer Show Luo!

A lucky fan, who flew from Indonesia to Singapore, won a chance to share the stage with LC9. But the  excitement didn’t just end there. The fan even managed to capture an exclusive golden moment with her favorite member on polaroid!

LC9 promised its new album will be released in the first half of 2014 so, Love Beats, you have something to look forward to in the New Year! For those in Asia, there’s more in store for you. The boys said they’ll likely hold a showcase in December and January somewhere near you, so cross your fingers that you’ll be able to catch them live again soon.

Despite having debuted less than a year ago, LC9 impressed its many fans with incredible dance moves, beautiful vocals and, most importantly, versatility in taking on different genres of music shown in its cover performances. During their interviews, the members surprisingly showed a fun-loving side of themselves, allowing fans to get to know each of them better! Catch more of the spontaneous side of the LC9 members with their first reality show, “LC9’s Life of Research.”

Movember Is Here!

November brings rain, cold and wind in many countries around the world. But a growing initiative is helping men stay warm in the fast-approaching winter. Movember is here!

Movember is an mens health awareness campaign that started in Australia 10 years ago and has since grown (pun intended) into an international movement. By encouraging men to put away their razors and grow a “mo” (mustache or beard) this month, men around the globe hope to raise awareness and money for prostate and testicular cancers and mental health issues. Taking part is incredibly easy. Men, to take part, you simply let your facial hear grow in November. And, ladies: encourage the men in your lives to get involved.

Need inspiration to grow and groom your mustache (or beard)? Look no further than some great dramas from this year.

Gao Godfrey in Never Give Up, Dodo

Gao Godfrey plays the hilarious Xu Fei in the Chinese Web drama Never Give Up, Dodo. His facial hair is a perfect fit for his character, not to mention the currently airing show is just in time for Movember!

Gao Godfrey

Lee Jun Ki in Two Weeks

In the K-drama Two Weeks, we see get an awesome mustache on Jang Tae Sang (played by Lee Jun Ki) as he fights to stay alive and elude the authorities and some really bad gangsters. We love how the facial hair adds to his ninja/spy outfit.

Lee Jun Ki

Kim Nam Gil in Shark

Kim Joon (played by Kim Nam Gil) in the K-drama Shark rocks this great mustache. Were hoping he still has it even though the show has wrapped!

Kim Nam Gil
Yoon Shi Yoon in Flower Boy Next Door

Check out the mo of Enrique (played by Yoon Shi Yoon) from the K-drama Flower Boy Next Door. We think it goes well with his fun, energetic character!

Mean Girls in Dramas: BFFs to Worst Enemies

A famous quote by the English playwright William Congreve says, Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

A woman can start out as your “BFF” (best friend forever), but what happens when that relationship ends up on the rocks? There is nothing more treacherous — or more fun to watch — than a woman who suddenly becomes your worst enemy. Here are three examples of female relationships gone awry from our favorite television dramas and anime on Viki.

When new students arrive at the White Witch Academy in this 2013 Japanese drama series, the girls must put the pains of their past lives behind them to learn the art of witchcraft. The new class of girls bond over their shared challenges to develop their magical powers. But that closeness goes horribly wrong when they are faced with their last challenge: to turn against each other to become a White Witch. Who will be the last girl standing?

In this Japanese anime series, Nanako attends a prestigious girls high school and is invited to join an exclusive sorority” by her new friend, Mary. But Mary tries to drive a wedge between Nanako and her childhood best friend, Tomoko. Could Mary have something up her sleeve in intentionally causing problems between the best friends?

The Greatest Love

Goo Ae Jung (played by Gong Hyo Jin) and Kang Se Ri (played by Yoo In Na) were in the same popular K-pop girl group that broke up years ago in this 2011 Korean drama series. The former friends are no longer on good terms over some unknown event that happened years ago. Se Ri, who is now the bigger star, wants to make sure that Ae Jung continues to live marginally as a has-been. Will Se Ri also steal away Ae Jung’s man?

What is your favorite example of a female relationship that goes from good to bad? Let us know!

Korean R&B Singer Jung In to Marry Co-Star Jo Jung Chi

Love is in the air for Korean celebrities this year. A few months ago, we watched the blockbuster wedding ceremonies for Lee Byung Hun/Lee Min Jung and Ji Sung/Park Bo Young. It seems to now be in vogue for stars to tie the knot after meeting on the set of TV dramas and movies. This time, we celebrate the modest and low-key marriage of two talented musicians.

Indie musician Jo Jung Chi proposed to his girlfriend of 11 years, R&B singer Jung In, while filming the final episode of the reality show, We Got Married. The real-life couple played virtual newlyweds as part of the show, performing such married life tasks as moving into a new home and entertaining dinner guests.

Listen to Jung Ins lovely ballad, Rainy Season

As a finale event for their segment on We Got Married, Jo Jung Chi surprised Jung In with a marriage proposal. However, Jung In is opposed to the idea of a big wedding ceremony and the institution of marriage itself, so she responded sadly with, Dont do this.

Jung In and Jo Jung Chi have decided to forgo a traditional wedding.
Two months later, the couple announced that there will be a marriage after all — but without a wedding. Jung In and Jo Jung Chi will complete the legal marriage registration, have a small get-together with family, and plan out their honeymoon.

Congratulations from Viki to this kind and talented pair!

This year, Korean boy band Infinite went on its very first world tour, visiting all of its fans from Seoul  to Jakarta, Indonesia; San Jose, California; and even London! Fans from all over the world prepared themselves for this very special concert, learning all the words to their favorite songs and even preparing presents for the band’s members!

Of course, being fans of Infinite, we had to go and prepare ourselves for the concert as well!

First, we learned all the words to the band’s newest song, “Destiny.”

Then, we painted our nails in celebration of Infinite’s official color (“metal pearl gold”) and the first world tour! The gold is for Infinite, and the blue-grey represents the color scheme of the newest album, “Destiny.”

After that, we got ready to attend the concert with our friends!

Vikis Brittany and Stephanie with friends!
At the concert, we were not disappointed! Infinite sang some fan favorites, including “Destiny,” “Love U Like U,” “Man in Love”and “Before the Dawn”!

It was incredible to see the boys live, and their passion and joy of meeting with their fans truly showed in their performance! There was plenty of “aegyo” (making cute faces) and fan interaction — Woohyun even gave a rose to one very lucky fan!

Evil Characters' Most Biting Words in Taiwanese Dramas

$

There is always this one person in every drama who manages to barge in at that critical moment, proceeds to say the worst words you could think of, and creates tension between the protagonists. As these evil characters spoil the mood, you’ve got to admit they make the series that much more exciting, especially in some of our favorite Taiwanese dramas!

Be it the jealous ex-girlfriend, a distant relative or even a bad sibling, these characters all have had some pretty memorable lines. Let’s take a look at some of these deliciously meddlesome characters and their biting words in some recent Taiwanese dramas on Viki!

Wang Si Ping in Deja Vu
In this heartbreaking romance series, You Xi (Wang Si Ping) and Hai Lin (Mandy Wei) are half-sisters, and You Xi believes that Hai Lin has an ulterior motive for approaching Xi Wei (How Yao), her boyfriend. Prejudiced against Hai Lin and her mother, You Xi said this in attempt to drive Hai Lin away: “凭你身上流着的小三血溢让我不安.” (It’s the home-wrecker blood that flows in you that makes me so uncomfortable.) Ouch!

Amanda Zhu in The Fierce Wife

There is nothing worse than a third wheel wedging herself in between a perfectly happy couple. Wei En (Amanda Zhu), An Zhen’s (Sonia Sui) cousin from the States, grows smitten with An Zhens husband, Rui Fan (James Wen), and fails to see the fault in that. Wei En even tries to claim Rui Fan as her property by saying, “在爱情的世界里, 不被爱的那个才是第三者” (I’m not the third party. The third party is the person who is not loved.) Whoa!

Jia An in Just You
What could top a crazy ex-girlfriend? Definitely a crazy and possessive ex-fiancée! In this humorous romantic drama, Jia Yu (Jia An) returns to Taiwan years after leaving Qi Yi (Aaron Yan) and tries to recapture his heart. After Liang Liang successfully reunites Qi Yi and his mother, Jia Yu steps in to claim undeserved credit and says, “如果没有我, 齊翼的幸福不会完整.(If it wasn’t for me, would Qi Yi’s happiness be complete?) Maybe...

From the above scenarios, would you say these meddling characters are full of themselves or simply delusional?

These Taiwanese dramas are available in the Americas, Europe and select Southeast Asian countries.

Viki U: Don’t Know Another Language? Try Segmenting!

$

Have you ever wanted to contribute to the subtitles on Viki but never thought you could because you only know one language? Heres an excellent way to contribute: Segmenting! (Another great way is captioning!)

Segmenters are very important on Viki. Before subtitles can be added, a video must be cut into “segments.” Well-timed segments mean that subtitles will show on screen at exactly the right time. Timing segments is a relaxing and addictive activity!

Heres how you get started!

Segmenting is done using the “Segment Timer” tool. To open the tool, click on the “Segment Timer” button located at the top right of the video page.

This short tutorial video will show you the basics of segmenting using the Segment Timer:

In some channels, such as on-air TV shows, segmenters like to work together on a team. If youd like to join that team and become a “Designated Segmenter” for the channel, the Channel Manager must approve you. If you dont receive a response in seven days from the Channel Manager, please send a message to the Help Center, and we can try to help you become a segmenter on the channel.

Good segmenting is a skill that takes time to master, so we recommend that you practice and gain experience on short-form videos (e.g., Music and News) or channels with fewer volunteers (e.g., Classics). Remember: You may segment freely on all channels managed by Viki, but as a courtesy, please contact the Channel Manager if he/she is a Viki community member.

More Resources

For a more detailed guide to segmenting, check out our articles: Using the Segment Timer and How to Segment a Video. Check out these great community-created resources for more help and information about segmenting: The Segmenting 101 Project and Learning By Doing.

If you have any other questions that we havent answered here, please write to us at the Help Center and well get back to you as soon as possible!
