Hari Raya Special on Viki
We're about to celebrate the Hari Raya Haj celebration, which is on October 26, 2012. This means that this weekend will be a long weekend in Indonesia. Yay! Do you have a plans for the holiday yet?! We have several good courage-and-sacrifice themed movies which we are sure you’ll enjoy watching this Hari Raya holiday.
Malaton is based on a real-life story of an autistic boy who wants to be a marathon champion. His mother, Kyeong Sook, realizes this and starts to direct and support him to join in running competitions.
Another must-watch movie for this holiday is Herb. This movie is about Sang Eun, 20 year-old, who is developmentally disabled and behaves like a 7-year-old. She spends her days making intricate origami designs and dreaming of marrying her Prince Charming, just like in the books she reads. Her mother dotes on her and tries to do everything in her power to shield her from harm. But Sang Eun begins to experience adult emotions when she falls in love with a police officer. How much longer can Sang Eun’s mother continue to protect her daughter?
For Horowitz is another movie that you can add to your holiday lineup. Kim Ji Su aspires to be a great classical pianist just like her idol, Vladimir Horowitz. But her dreams are crushed when her family is unable to pay for a musical education overseas. With no other options, Ji Su opens up a music studio and begins teaching other aspiring pianists.
These three movies deliver a deep and touching message about sacrifice and courage, and we are sure they will be great movies to watch during this holiday. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do! :)
We're excited to announce that a new feature that allows Channel staff to more easily find contributors to join their Channel Teams, is now live! November 4th is a special day for K-Pop and K-Drama fans: a double celebrity birthday! In dramas like Ghost and IRIS, So Ji Sub and Big Bang's T.O.P have both captivated audiences with their expressive eyes and strong charisma. We want to wish these superstars a very happy birthday, and we hope to see them work together one day.
Big Bang's T.O.P is 25 today
Did any of you get to attend the Big Bang concert in Southern California yesterday? Then you probably enjoy your daily dose of "Boomshakalaka" from your favorite rapper, T.O.P.
T.O.P's successful music career has been complemented in recent years by acting in dramas and movies. Check out his bad boy role in spy action thriller, IRIS, which also stars Lee Byung-Hun and Kim Tae Hee.
Actor So Ji Sub turns 34 today, celebrating 16 years of acting in the Korean entertainment industry. You can see his talent on display in the intense drama, Cain and Abel, movies like Rough Cut and the military series, Road No. 1. Most recently, he played a cyber-detective seeking the truth and revenge in Ghost. Watch the first episode here, available to viewers in the Americas:
And did you know that he started as a model to "make some easy money," and never had any intention of becoming the star he is now?
So Ji Sub turns 34 today
Lee Dongwook is the first K-Drama star that millions of fans fell for back in 2005, with his famous performance in My Girl. We all remember the final kiss scene, where he planted a kiss on Lee Da Hae's forehead and asked her, straight-faced, if she was disappointed before going in for the real thing. There were even more romantic scenes in one of his other dramas, Scent of a Woman with Kim Sun Ah. You can enjoy the main soundtrack by JYJ's Xiah Junsu while watching the best scenes of the drama below:
Today, this Hallyu star turns 31, and his success doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon. You can watch him in romantic comedy, Wild Romance, available to viewers in the Americas. And you can see more of his funny side on the popular variety show, Strong Heart, also available in the Americas. Check out this funny episode, featuring plenty of K-Drama stars:
We look forward to seeing this handsome actor's next project, but we hope he can take a break from acting and enjoy a relaxed birthday!
Happy 31st birthday!

The Troops of Dreamers is another film from Indonesia, following the struggles of a ragtag bunch of amateur soldiers fighting for independence. It is available worldwide except for Malaysia and Brunei.
We hope these films can lighten up your Autumn before the holidays!
This week, The Innocent Man (previously known as "Nice Guy") reaches its final conclusion. The twisted plot that weaves together the lives of Ma Ru, Eun Gi, and Jae Hee has been picking up speed in the last few episodes, and you can watch them all on Viki if you are in the Americas. If nothing else, you should check out an episode to see one of the most foreboding and attractive introduction sequences in all of K-Drama.
"The Innocent Man" ends today
The Innocent Man follows events in the life of Kang Ma Ru, a promising young medical student who gave up his his future to protect his hometown sweetheart, Han Jae Hee. After confessing to a murder that Jae Hee herself committed, Ma Ru lived as a swindler and con artist for years. He could not be hired for a normal job, let alone return to medical school, because of his criminal record. When Ma Ru discovers that Jae Hee has maneuvered into the powerful Taesan Group family, he plots to bring her down, manipulating the chairman's daughter to get closer to Jae Hee.
The three main characters are complex and well-written, and it's interesting to see how they all come to share similar flaws and desires.
Kang Ma Ru, played by Song Joong Ki (Sungkyunkwan Scandal, A Tree with Deep Roots), is a master at lying and using others, but willingly sacrifices himself to protect the woman he loves. It might have been hard to imagine such a "baby-faced" actor in this dark role, but all doubts are cast aside when he goes into plotting mode. Viewers know what I'm talking about: when his gaze rests on his target, his smirk disappears, and ominous tango music fills the room. We could watch these scenes all day!
Song Joong Ki gets revenge as Kang Ma Ru
Seo Eun Gi (Moon Chae Won) is an heir to the Taesan fortune who appears tough on the outside, but has a pure heart and only wants to be loved. She falls in love instantly when she meets Ma Ru, before she knows his past and what kind of person he is; tragically, she tries to destroy both Ma Ru and herself after finding out his true nature.
Park Shi Yeon plays the villain, Jae Hee, who is revealed to be vulnerable and lonely behind her cold stare. Can't these three let go of their vengeful plans and become a happy family? It doesn't look like this is how the story ends, but you'll have to catch the finale, released today, to find out.
We're halfway through the month of November. For many this month is referred to as 'No Shave November' or 'Movember,' a month which symbolizes men ditching their razors for the entire month and growing facial hair, often for charity.
To celebrate this trend we've selected some men who's manly beards and mustaches we admire!
Bad Boy is a story of revenge carried out against a wealthy family by a cold, calculated man named Gun-wook played by the handsome mustached Kim Nam Gil. Bad Boy is available to viewers worldwide, except in select countries.
The A-Team is an iconic 1980's American TV series about a group of Vietnam vets who were framed for a crime they did not commit. While on the run, they work as vigilantes helping the innocent. Mr T's plays bearded strong man and mechanic Sergeant First Class Bosco. Viewers in South East Asia watch all the action adventure now!
For many this week is the celebration of Thanksgiving, a time to enjoy great food and traditions with family and friends. So as you prepare to enjoy the holiday, here are some of our favorite movies to get you in the spirit of giving, food and family.

This Saturday, one of the most talented young actresses in Korea makes her return to the small screen in Cheongdam-dong Alice (청담동 앨리스). Moon Geun Young, who has impressed audiences ever since her childhood role in Autumn Tale, will play a hard-working girl trying to make a name for herself in the fashion industry. She will be romanced by Park Shi Hoo, the lead actor from dramas like Prosecutor Princess and The Princess' Man. We look forward to seeing his signature smile as he takes "Alice" down the rabbit hole to a new, glamorous life. Cheongdam-dong Alice is available to viewers in the Americas, and new episodes will air every Saturday and Sunday night (KST).
Moon Geun Young is "Cheongdam-dong Alice"
If you're a fan of Moon Geun Young and her bright, hopeful characters, you'd probably enjoy the 2005 romantic comedy, Innocent Steps. In this funny and heartwarming film, she is mistaken for her sister and recruited to compete in a national dance competition. Her partner, played by Park Geon Hyeong (the suave "doc" from I do, I do), is the dancer who must train her to win the championship in only three months. This movie is available to viewers worldwide except for these select countries: Korea, United States, China, Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Congratulations to the winners of the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA)! Let's celebrate by enjoying some of the evening's big winners.
PSY- Gangnam Style
In only two days, Hallyu star Hyun Bin will be discharged from the Korean military after completing 21 months of service. It's hard to believe that it has been almost two years since one of the most popular actors in Korea left the acting scene to fulfill his duty in the military. We're looking forward to seeing him back on the screen in a new drama or movie, but for now, we can look back and enjoy his past roles. Take this fun poll on our Facebook page to vote for your favorite Hyun Bin character!
Hyun Bin will be discharged on Dec. 6
In Snow Queen (눈의 여왕), Han Tae-Woong is a young math genius who quits school and runs away from home after learning that he may have caused the suicide of his best friend. Saddled with guilt, he changes his name and joins a boxing club. Hyun Bin's portrayal of a rough, street-smart fighter with a troubled past is a far cry from his more famous K-Drama "prince" characters. This drama is available in US & Canada.
World Within (그들이 사는 세상) was the start of Hyun Bin's famed relationship with his A-list co-star, Song Hye Gyo. In this drama, he plays a charismatic TV producer from a poor farmer's family, who teaches the cold, reserved Joo Joon Young how to express her feelings and learn to trust others. This drama is available in US & Canada.
The role that pushed Hyun Bin into the global spotlight was the spoiled hotelier in My Name is Kim Sam-Soon (내 이름은 김삼순). The rude, immature Kim Jin-heon tries his best to push around his newly-hired patissier, but she throws the insults right back in his face, making for one of the funniest romantic comedies in all of K-Drama. This show is available in US, Canada, Middle East and Africa.
Hyun Bin most recently captured fans in body-switching drama, Secret Garden (스크릿 가든). Taking "eccentric" to the extreme, Kim Joo-Won refuses to ride in elevators, talks to imaginary people, and insists on wearing his velour track jackets zipped to the top. And just when you think he's about to fall in love with the tough stuntwoman (played by Ha Ji Won), the two switch bodies in an unbelievable twist. This drama is available worldwide except in select countries.
Each of Hyun Bin's characters is different, and lovable in their own way. What type of role do you want to see him take on for his comeback performance?
We have amazing people in the community, and we'd like to start introducing them through the Viki Blog! As the first community member to be featured, yolswels091, has written a story about her life at Viki. We know many of you will be able to relate to her experiences!
MY VIKI LIFE
So I created an account on Viikii.com and learned that it's a community-based website. It didn't interest me that much as I didn't have time to explore the whole website. I was still in school and studying seriously, so for me it was one of those websites where you create an account and forget about it after a few days. Yeah, it's true.
After graduating from the University, I went to US and started working. It was the kind of job that kills your social life, so I looked for help from my laptop and that became my best friend. To kill time, I started watching shows on the net. Then I remembered Viikii.
Viikii was still there. I had forgotten my previous account so I decided to make a new one dated September 15, 2010, one that is still alive now. It was really hard for me at the beginning. I didn't have friends or any contact for that matter. I can't even remember who the first user was that I made contact with. So after looking through and exploring the website, trying to learn to navigate the whole thing, I still ended up quite confused about how everything works. What got me started was finding some of my fellow countrymen on Viikii. BINGO! It's a translation site. That's what Viikii is all about.
I started as a Tagalog subber. At first, I was scolded. I translated some lines in Sungkyunkwan Scandal without anybody's permission. But I didn't know there was a system of Channel Managers, moderators and such. I can't remember what happened after that, but I ended up as a regular Tagalog subber for some dramas. I'm quite diligent and looking at how my subbing credits increased by the minute made my day. lol
After a couple of months of subbing, I felt envious of other users. They're had some big roles in channels and I feeling bored with subbing. English is the second language in the Philippines, so translating English to Tagalog isn't that necessary. What really interested me were the segmenters. "They're so cool," I thought back then. It's like they have their own world in Viikii.
Then I learned about SEG101. I'd say that they did a great job at scaring people -- the Channel was really intimidating... lol. At the time, they were celebrating their first anniversary. They had a very long list of aspiring students so the wait looked like it would forever. Luckily, I found out about their Avatar Contest, and that they were giving admissions to the top 3 winners. So I joined and submitted 2 avatars. I was actually surprised by the results because the avatar that I didn't have any expectations for got the votes and won me 3rd place. It was a very simple avatar design -- it was a person holding scissors, a globe and a film strip.
So I became a SEG101 newbie. I concentrated on learning the proper way to segment alongside with my mentor FTHIA. After a few months, I graduated. With my SEG101 badge, I had the confidence that I could finally segment.
My first contributions as a segmenter were in Lie To Me, which I think was one of the first Korean Dramas Viki licensed. My first day segmenting on a real project was a mess. I got the first part on episode 1, and I thought it took me forever to finish. My God, I was so conscious of my timings and everything. But as episodes went on, I got my confidence to race alongside with the segmenting veterans. Sadly, Lie to Me didn't do well. But I was still optimistic and had started to love segmenting -- it was my first segmenting project after all. After the show ended, I became Lie to Me's number 1 segmenter garnering the highest number of segments.
Becoming a Viki user was much more helpful than I thought. I said earlier that my job could kill a social life. I didn't choose it because I'm a loner or anything, but it's just that some people, like me, just don't have the luxury to choose a better job yet. But it gives me a lot of time to be on Viki. That's basically the life that I have right now, and I have gained lots of friends across the globe which is the best experience of all.
As the end of the year approaches it's time for the 1st annual Viki Fan Favorite vote! The power is in your hands. What was your favorite comeback, comedy, drama and more? Let us know by casting your vote here. And share your vote on your Facebook and Twitter to encourage your friends to vote as well.
You can vote once a day between now and December 31.

Several stars had successful TV comebacks in 2012. After 12 years away from dramas, Jang Dong Gun still had the same charm in his return to 'Gentleman's Dignity.'
This year also brought great body-swapping K-Dramas and time traveling shows. From Lee Min Ho as Korean warrior Admiral Choi Young, to Gong Yoo in body swapping hit "Big."
Psy took over the world with his infectious song 'Gangnam Style.' The horse dance choreography helped bring K-pop into the mainstream. The boys of Super Junior also had explosive dance moves in their hot music video 'Sexy Free and Single.' Which was your favorite?
We hope you enjoyed re-watching all of your favorite videos and sharing them with us on Viki!
