 Yui Yokohama cheerfully hosts each episode of ‘Kyoto Diary’

Join AKB48’s Team K captain Yui Yokohama as she introduces fans to her hometown of Kyoto in “Kyoto Diary of Yui Yokohama From AKB48.” Of course this pop idol was able to snag a reservation at Kyoto’s famous Sojiki Nakahigashi restaurant, famous for its seasonal kaiseki-ryori, a multi-course haute cuisine using herbs and flowers that the chef handpicks daily from the nearby mountains.



Kyoto is home to one of the most iconic symbols of Japan: Geishas. Perhaps you will get lucky and spot a Geisha wandering through the cobblestone streets of the Gion district! A trip to Kyoto is not complete until you visit Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion that is covered in glimmering gold leaf.


In the series “Tabipura,” you will travel with Japanese actor Koji Matoba (“Sweets Prince”) and comedian Sanpei Hayashiya while they tour the far edges of Japan and introduce viewers to local favorites and hidden gems. Leave the guidebook behind!



In “Tabipura Episode 2: Beppu,” join the two hosts as they explore Beppu, known for its jigoku, or hells, the eight soothing hot springs that are located across the prefecture. These buddies take on the hells and also delight in various delicacies like tori-ten (Japanese tempura fried chicken) and steamed custard purin (pudding).

Art lovers will be especially drawn to Setouchi, a rural region encompassing 12 islands. The Setouchi Triennale is an expansive arts event that takes place every three years, featuring work from more than 200 artists. The next event will be held in 2016.  Follow celebrated actress Kiki Kirin as she discovers the wonders of the islands of Setouchi and the Setouchi Triennale.

Tourists from all over the world gather in this artists hub to enrich themselves in the culture and rich natural beauty that is Setouchi. One of the most famous islands of this illustrious locale is Naoshima, home to a number of permanent artworks, including works by renowned artists Yayoi Kusama and Kenji Yanobe. 

Anime fans will enjoy Kenji Yanobe’s steel dragon sculpture found on Shodoshima Island. 
Of course you have heard of Mt. Fuji, but did you know that Japan also is home to the skier’s paradise, Mt. Hakuba? Outdoors enthusiasts will be inspired by the bright white snow-capped alps of Nagano. “Nature & Human Special Series shows us the abundant beautiful nature found in this area. Hiking, skiing and snowboarding are all on the itinerary!
