For many of us, the New Year is a prime time to make resolutions and get a start fresh, all in an effort to be an even more awesome version of ourselves! Because who doesn’t want to be more awesome, right? If we have to put in our two-cents worth, what better way to do that then to pick up a new language? January not only marks the start of 2015, but the month kicks off another exciting year of language learning with your favorite shows and stars on Viki!

Whether you’re just starting to pick up a new tongue or are a full-blown polyglot just looking to touch up your skills, be sure to get the ball rolling on your 2015 language-learning journey with these four ways to say “Happy New Year” from across the globe!

Fun Fact: When greeting each other for the New Year, Koreans bow to each other as they say “Sae hae bok mani baduseyo (새해 복 많이 받으세요).

Fun Fact:“Xin nian kuai le (新年快乐)” in Mandarin directly translates to Happy New Year! For Lunar New Year, which is a different date than January 1 on the Western calendar, some Chinese people choose to use other greetings, such as “Gong xi fa cai (恭喜发财),” which means to “wish someone prosperity in the coming year.”

Fun Fact: Besides greeting each other in person with Shin nen ake mashite omede tou (新年あけましておめでとう), many Japanese send their friends and family cards known as nengajō (年賀状) to be delivered on New Years Day.

Fun Fact: ¡Feliz año nuevo! is just one of the New Years greetings in Spanish. Another more formal greeting you can use is ¡Próspero año nuevo!

Whew! If you’re like us and still want to revel in the New Year’s spirit, you’re in luck! There’s a host of great shows to satisfy your New Year’s void:

Running Man

For the more unconventional types, take a page from Yoo Jae Suk and the rest of the always-hilarious “Running Man” crew. In the South Korean hit variety show’s can’t-miss 2015 New Year Special, the cast members give their New Year’s greetings and then battle the elements with Lee Seung Gi of “You’re All Surrounded” and Moon Chae Won of “Good Doctor.”

2015 Taipei 101 New Year’s Eve Countdown

If you’re in more of a celebratory mood, join Taipei’s brightest and hottest stars as they gather to ring in the New Year in grand fashion during the 2015 Taipei 101 New Year’s Eve Countdown. Complete with high-energy performances from artists such as boy group SpeXial of “Angel ‘n’ Devil,” JJ Lin and Show Luo, as well as spectacular fireworks (because what New Year’s is complete without them?), this show is definitely one to put on your must-watch list!

Mischievous Kiss: Love in TOKYO

Suppose you’re the type that leans more toward the culturally traditional? Then follow Kotoko of “Mischievous Kiss: Love in TOKYO” and “Mischievous Kiss: Love in TOKYO 2” as she partakes in the Japanese custom of hatsumode, offering prayers with her friends at a local shrine in episode 4 of the original series.

But even after all of the celebrations die down, make sure that your language-learning journey continues throughout the year! Take a look back on our past posts to refresh yourself on all of the great phrases, words and languages we’ve covered together and connect with other language learners through Discussions!
