In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8 — a day that marks the special achievements and the empowerment of women in many countries around the world — we want to introduce you to six characters (or groups of women) from our favorite dramas and movies on Viki that command respect, appreciation and maybe a little fear from those around them.
Whether it’s through female friendships, career success or political achievement, these strong women inspire us to go after what we want and not let anything stand in our way!
The Great Queen Seon Deok
Princess Deokman (played by Lee Yo Won) survives being thrown out and abandoned as a child and many attempts by an evil concubine to get rid of her forever. She returns to her rightful place in the palace and rises to become the first female ruler of the Silla kingdom. Don’t mess with this royal lady!
My Queen
Early in her life, the successful Shan Wu Shuang (played by Cheryl Yang) made no apologies for putting her career first as she rose to become the editor of a major magazine. When she meets a young male assistant at work, she proves that she can have her cake and eat it, too. You go, girl!
Lipstick Jungle
Three best friends in New York City prove that they can be beautiful, successful and feminine. As they handle their high-pressure jobs and relationships, they always find time for their closest female friends. This show is based on a book by “Sex and the City” writer Candace Bushnell.

A group of ordinary women prove that they can do anything they put their minds to. Five women become the Robin Hoods of their neighborhoods as they go after dirty businesses and the criminals who profit from illegal activities. Don’t mess with these ladies or they will run you out of town!

Rosaura Rios (played by Marlene Favela) rises from poverty and claws her way to financial security even though others try to rip her marriage apart, make her miscarry her baby, frame her for robbery and murder, and otherwise make her life a living hell. The gorgeous Daimon Michiko is the total package, with the looks of a top a fashion model and the brains of a highly skilled surgeon. As a freelance surgeon who goes where she is needed, she stays above the petty political infighting that occurs in the hospitals and stand up for the things she needs do her job well. We all should be so lucky to be treated by an outspoken doctor like her who do whatever it takes to protect her patients!
