The world lost one of its brightest stars when Shirley Temple Black died at the age of 85 at her home in Woodside, California, this week. Known to the world as Shirley Temple, the American actress and future world diplomat is one of the most iconic and famous child stars from the early days of Hollywood.

Temple began her career in movies at the tender age of 3, acting, singing and dancing alongside some of the greatest actors of the time. In 1939, she starred in the classic The Little Princess,” one of her most famous roles that cemented her status as a Hollywood star. In the film, Temple plays Sara, whose father leaves her at a seminary for girls while he goes to Africa to serve in the army. When her father is reported killed, little Sara is reduced from a life of privilege to that of a house servant.
